Applicants must possess a Level 2 certification in water and wastewater treatment and production at the time of application. Successful candidates will be required to obtain Level 3 certification within a specified timeframe. Residency within a one-hour radius of the designated location is mandatory. Additionally, candidates must be able to respond to emergencies within one hour of notification.

SUMMARY

Responsible, under the direction of the Director of Public Utilities, for the operation and maintenance of the district’s public water supply system and wells, and the district’s wastewater collection and treatment systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DISCLAIMER: This description covers the principal duties and responsibilities of the job.  The description shall not, however, be construed as a complete listing of all duties which may be required from day to day.  Performs or supervises Operators 1 and 2 in the performance of duties as listed below under Essential Duties and Responsibilities.

  • Makes daily checks on major components of both the water system and wastewater system.
  • Performs required analyses of water supply and wastewater discharge and enters data for required record-keeping.
  • Perform utility locates.
  • Perform reads / re-reads.
  • Makes repairs to water and sewerage lines and mechanical/electrical equipment when capable.  If needed repairs are beyond the operator’s ability, he notifies the Director to obtain an outside contractor to perform the needed work.
  • Maintains sewerage flows and un-stops clogged sewers as needed.  If unable to perform these tasks, the operator notifies the Director of the need for an outside contractor.
  • Helps maintain premises in an orderly fashion.
  • Performs preventative maintenance as outlined in the Districts SOP for Operations and Maintenance.
  • Maintains job safety standards while working on any lines or equipment and employs the use of required safety equipment and personal safety equipment.
  • Demonstrates ability and desire to work in a team environment and is subject to be on-call 24/7.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Exercises supervision over Operator 1 and 2.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.  Minimum of (3) years experience in industrial/environmental operations and maintenance, preferably in water and/or wastewater; and/or equivalent combination of education and training in industrial/environmental field.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Random drug testing is conducted on all Consolidated Waterworks and Sewerage District employees.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, ability to write routine reports and correspondence, ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the parish.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to do computations as required under the Louisiana State Department of Health and Hospitals rules of operator certification.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Louisiana Driver’s License

Certifications from the Louisiana State Department of Health and Hospitals in Water Treatment, Water Productions, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, and /or Wastewater Treatment.  Must be willing to pursue higher certifications by means of continuing education courses approved by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals for Operator Certification.
