Cold Weather Reminder: Help Protect Our Sewer System!
Posted: Jan 21, 2026, 4:42 PM
As freezing temperatures move in, we’re asking all residents to take a few simple steps to help keep our sewer system running smoothly. Extreme cold can cause problems not just in homes, but throughout the entire wastewater system, and your actions can make a big difference.
Here’s how you can help:
Let a small trickle of water run from at least one faucet during extreme cold.
This helps keep water moving through pipes, reducing the chance of freezing.
Limit what you flush.
Wipes (even “flushable” ones!), paper towels, and feminine products can clog private lines and the public sewer system.
Keep FATS, OILS, and GREASE (FOG) out of the drain.
When they cool, they harden — causing blockages that can worsen in freezing weather. Pour cooled grease into a container and throw it away.
Check outdoor and seldom-used drains.
Make sure cleanouts and outdoor drains are covered and insulated to keep cold air out of the system.
Know where your main cleanout is located.
If you experience a backup, having quick access to the cleanout can save time and prevent damage.
If you notice unusual sewer odors, slow drains, or backups, please report them right away so our crews can respond promptly.
Stay warm, stay safe, and thank you for helping keep our system flowing!
