During the November 19 Regular Agenda Meeting, the Bossier Parish Police Jury adopted a resolution commemorating the 250th anniversaries of the United States Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, recognizing their historic contributions to the nation's security and prosperity.
Established in 1775 by the Continental Congress, these branches have defended liberty and safeguarded America’s freedoms for two and a half centuries.
- The United States Army, founded on June 14, 1775, stands as the nation’s oldest military service.
- The United States Navy, founded on October 13, 1775, has ensured freedom of navigation and projected power across the globe.
- The United States Marine Corps, founded on November 10, 1775, has served as an elite fighting force with courage and commitment.
Together, these services have fought in every major conflict from the Revolutionary War to the present day, exemplifying the highest traditions of service and sacrifice. Millions of Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines have given their lives, labor, and loyalty to preserve the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution.
“It’s very important that the Police Jury acknowledges the service of veterans in our parish,” said Mike Thornton, USMC Lt. Col. (Ret), a Bossier Parish resident who served for 30 years of service., and he currently serves as an advisor to the Consolidated Waterworks District No. 1. “This resolution is a great way to do that because it reaches the public. People will see it, and so will all the veterans, across every branch, not just the Navy and Air Force, but the Army, Marine Corps, and others. It shows that the parish values its veterans, and it should, given the impact they have on both the parish and the state.” He says it’s also important to support the men and women who are currently serving. “Those still serving need to know there are folks back home who support them. that sense of connection matters.”
The Police Jury urges the residents of Bossier Parish to participate in honoring this historic milestone and to thank everyone who has served and still serves.
