Preplanning for Winter Weather

Posted: Jan 9, 2025, 9:14 AM

Bossier Parish Police Jury members and staff, officials and first responders from both sides of the Red River, and staff of the Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) met this morning at the Bossier Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness to develop a plan to keep the highways and bridges in both parishes open for traffic ahead of the winter storm forecasted for the area.

Officials stated that last year's strategies for maintaining traffic on I-20 and I-220 were adequate to implement ahead of this Winter Storm Cora. This year’s plans include dispatching road crews to pretreat the roadways and bridges with brine and then adding salt and sand to prevent any frozen precipitation from sticking.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, the area is under a winter storm warning that will remain in effect from Thursday morning through Friday.
Residents are encouraged to stay home and off the roads while temperatures drop below freezing. Carly Kovacik with the National Weather Service says forecast models predict a mixture of frozen precipitation will fall during the 24-hour event.
Ice and snow accumulation are expected to affect roads and overpasses in the northern portion of the parish. Plan for slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commutes.

As a precaution officials are urging residents to consider delaying all travel and if travel is necessary, drive with extreme caution.
