Trailblazer schedules two events in August


Trailblazer RC&D has scheduled a pair of free events in August targeting landowners, farmers, entrepreneurs and community leaders.

A Pond Management Workshop will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 3 at the Claiborne Parish Library at 909 Edgewood Dr. in Homer. Trailblazer is holding the event in cooperation with the Claiborne Parish Library, Claiborne Parish Police Jury and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Two days later, on Saturday, Aug. 5, Trailblazer’s The Big Event will be held in cooperation with Grambling State University and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the auditorium and student lounge at the Betty E. Smith School of Nursing on the Grambling campus.

At then pond management workshop, landowners interested in constructing a pond or managing fish in an existing pond can learn about technical and financial assistance that may be available. The NRCS has been building ponds for more than 60 years.

Also, La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist Jeff Sibley will discuss managing weeds, stocking and maintaining fish populations, pond structures, water quality issues, pond supplies, cycle of pond life and more.

At the Aug. 5 Big Event, topics of discussion will include community development opportunities, youth in agriculture opportunities, financial opportunities, rural housing, water quality and mineral rights: oil and gas leasing considerations.
